The 1st Squadron 9th Cavalry is Home from Iraq!!
A note from LTC Todd on December11th 2007. The Squadron is home less a stay behind platoon. Also, Chuck Knowlen (C Troop 1965-1966) met them and Keitron mentions him below. We will have to wait a couple of months for the remaining Brigades to return to FT Hood.
An email from Keitron A. Todd LTC, Commanding, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment:
Joe, We had a mad dash through Kuwait and arrived back at Bliss on evening of 9th. We literally spent no time in Kuwait which was great. The flight took us through Bangor which had a great welcome for everyone. We met a gentlemen who served with the Squadron in 1965-1966. His name was Charlie Knowlen. He was in C Trp, so I introduced him to my C Trp Commander and one of my Plt Ldrs from C Trp. He talked about LTC Stockton and the incident that occurred which he was a part of. He thought highly of him. The entire Squadron minus the Squadron XO with roughly a plt size element is part of a consolidated brigade trail party for equipment turn in procedures has redeployed now.
The BCT will reflag as you mentioned below in March. 1-9 will reflag as 2-13 Cav, unfortunately. Interestingly enough the colors will be sent back to Ft. Hood. However, the Squadron will remain a Cavalry Squadron instead of becoming an Infantry Battalion.
We will now go into a 30 day block leave period following our reintegration training. It is a nice break to recouperate after this past deployment. Have a wonderful Christmas.
Sincerely, Keitron

In other GOOD news from Iraq. An email on 5 December from Keitron A. Todd LTC, Commanding, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment:
Joe, Sorry I've been off the net. We had continuous ops (Operation Iron Hammer) and rolled directly into RIP (Relief in Place) and TOA (Transition of Authority). We transitioned the area of operations over on 3 Dec to 3rd Squadron, 3rd ACR.
The Squadron did great throughout Operation Iraqi Freedom 06-08. We had 3 Squadron changes of mission (Western Mosul, MTT enhancement, Tal Afar and Wesern Ninewah) over the 14 months and bounced all around the province but accomplished the mission on each account. These young warriors lived up to the Regimental Motto "We Can We Will" and I could not be more proud.
CSM Beever with all first sergeants flew out yesterday and will arrive back at Bliss. This is the first main body flight for the brigade. We were the first unit to deploy for the brigade last year. It has been a long but rewarding 14 months. The morale has remained high throughout the deployment as measured by meeting our retention goals last fiscal year. We were also the only unit in the Brigade to reenlist 50% of our yearly mission before redeploying. The remainder of the Squadron will close on Bliss very soon and begin much deserved leave. Thanks again for the support of the Squadron and God bless.
Sincerely, Keitron
